Purpose of this Course
This course covers the use of computers and information technologies as management tools within business organizations as well as use of Internet and other external information and marketing resources. It surveys the concepts of organizational and the technical foundations of management information systems (MIS) to introduce the concepts of IS to various end-users of information systems. Management of information, information technology, information resources, and systems development will be discussed t3o provide an understanding of using information systems to gain competitive advantage and aligning information systems to general business functions.
Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students should:
- Understand the strategic value of information, IS as a strategic weapon, and the IS strategic planning process
- Understand the relation of IS and organization
- Understand the impact of organizational culture on systems usage and development
- Be able to implement IS as a tool for organizational change
- Understand how to use IS to improve overall organizational performance
- Have familiarity with organizational and individual decision making processes and social and ethical issues of IS

Grading
Students should attend at every class and participate in the class. Be advised that lectures will be supplemented with materials that are not mentioned in the textbooks. These materials will be tested in exams. Students are expected to research the Internet and industry magazines and focus on the technology impact on business. You may get definitions from websites such as www.webopedia.com and whatis.techtarget.com.
Individual Cases: Each student will be assigned 2 (two) individual cases due according to the class schedule.
Team Cases: Students will be split in teams and team cases will be assigned to each team to be presented according to the class schedule.
Final Case: Each student will choose a topic for his/her final case study, due on the last day of class.
Students are expected to be present for all classes. Active participation in class discussions is strongly encouraged and graded. Further, lectures will be supplemented with materials, which are not mentioned in the text, and the students are responsible for these materials.
